Snow ImageSevere Weather and Tornado Preparedness

As temperatures increase, the possibility of severe thunderstorms and tornados increases as well.  There is a common, mistaken, belief that due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and its skyline, a tornado could not strike the City of Chicago.  To ensure that student and staff are prepared for this possibility, shools should review their Emergency Management Plans, test their Public Alert Radios, be prepared to shelter-in-place and to evacuate to Interior Safe Locations.

On Tuesday, April 1, at 10:00 AM, Chicago Public Schools, in cooperation with the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), will participate in a City-wide Tornado Drill.  On that first Tuesday of April, at 10:00 am, the normal time that Alert Sirens are tested, schools should execute a Shelter-in-Place Drill, and evacuate to Interior Safe Locations, as if a real tornado had been spotted and was approaching the City.  This drill should complete the drill cycle required by the Illinois School Safety Drill Act.

In advance of this drill, schools will be receiving a packet of informational materials that includes a Guide to Tornado Preparedness and a Tornado Preparedness CD produced and provided by OEMC.  This information should be shared with students, staff and parents to ensure that all residents of the City are equipped with the knowledge on how to be prepared for a tornado. You can also access this information on the Alert Chicago website.

In anticipation of potentially severe weather, schools should verify that their “Public Alert Radio”, which was provided to every school by the Federal Government, is in good working order.  For more information about Public Alert Radios visit the NOAA web site.
