Chicago Teachers Union leadership has chosen to end the strike. All Chicago Public Schools will re-open on Wednesday, September 19, and all CPS students are expected to be back in the classroom. Continue to check back at cps.edu for more information.
Educational Resources for CPS Students
In partnership with Achieve 3000, CPS is providing access to an online literacy program for ALL students in grades 2nd-12th. Achieve 3000 programs (KidBiz, TeenBiz, and Empower) will provide students self-directed programming that can be used at Children First Sites or at home during the work stoppage period. For more information and to register for "at home" access click here, www.cps.edu/achieve.
Starting Monday, Sept. 17, all Children First sites will provide accounts for students to take advantage of the Achieve 3000 tools. Students can use these accounts at the Children First sites or at home for the duration of the work stoppage. For CPS students not attending a Children First site, their parents/ guardians can call 773-553-1000 and obtain an activation key and instructions. Parents/Guardians will have to verify their child is a CPS student, and provide their child’s name, student ID, address, phone number and school.
Educational Resources for High School Students
Chicago Public Schools is providing a number of on-line educational resources for parents and students. These resources and tools will help students stay engaged in learning during the strike.
Now: All CPS High School Students are eligible to take free web based online courses through CPS. Students at off-site locations (home, libraries, and community centers) with computer and internet access may take credit recovery, elective courses or advanced placement courses for credit upon completion of their courses. At CPS Children First sites, seniors may have exposure to noncredit bearing college and career planning, reading/writing comprehension courses. For more information click here and to register click here.
Each Children First high school site will have trained professional college and career coaches and specialists offering daily “College and Career Sessions” to help students review college preparation checklists, explore college options, build a strong resume, review the Common Application and financial aid forms, draft personal statements and resumes, and prepare for interviews, college visits, and college fairs.
On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) will host an Open House at all seven of its City College Campuses from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. This is the first time that CCC is hosting open houses for CPS students in such a formally coordinated manner. CPS students will receive information on dual credit/dual enrollment opportunities, as well as a tour of the campus, information on College to Careers and opportunities to talk with advisors, faculty, and students.

Each video is a digestible chunk, approximately 10 minutes long, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer. All of the site's resources are available to anyone for free.

Field Museum
The Chicago Field Museum has provided three engaging interactive websites for students to learn more about the environment for 4th-12th grade students.
4th-8th grade: Virtual Coral Reef- Interact in an online virtual world, discover the fascinating creatures that live on a coral reef, play fun games that show you who eats who, and learn what you can do to keep coral reefs healthy.
6th-12th grade: Online Home Water Calculator- Find tips and tricks on how to reduce your water footprint as well as information on the water-related research that Field Museum scientists perform. How much water do you use?
6th-12th grade: INVASION!- Learn about the threat of the Asian Carp to the Great Lakes by playing the on-line game Invasion! Become a Carp Czar and see how your actions affect your public approval rating.

High School Resources Great Chicago Stories “Angelo’s Saturdays” This story is one of six historical fiction narratives in the Great Chicago Stories series. In the story, a young Italian immigrant, Angelo, describes the challenges of his life on the West Side, and his hope for a better life. Facing Freedom The Facing Freedom exhibition at the Chicago History Museum explores how Americans have defined freedom through workers’ rights, armed conflict, public protest, race, and citizenship. http://facingfreedom.org/
- Using the website students explore the four main themes of the exhibition, by discovering more about the eight moments from American history that are presented. Students can read more about the theme, people involved, and examine objects from the collection using the zoom and features.
- Students can also create their own collection using the My Freedom Collection feature. This feature allows students to make a title for their collection, choose objects related to it, and describe their collection. Each student is assigned a unique URL that can be shared with a parent or facilitator.
