The 2008-2009 Chicago Public Schools Young Authors’ Program contest winners were recently announced.
The original student work submitted included poetry, narrative stories and informational stories. The work was judged on focus, elaboration, organization, mechanics and presentation.
Competition categories were primary (kindergarten to second grade), intermediate (third to fifth grades) and upper (sixth to eighth grades).
The first-, second- and third-place CPS winners will be recognized at the 2009 Chicago Tribune Printers Row Lit Fest at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, June 7, in the South Loop, along Dearborn, from Congress south to Clark Street.
Here is a list of this year’s winners.
First place
- Primary: “The Lonely Elephant,” by a Gray School student
- Intermediate: “Spy Guys,” by a Keller School student
- Upper: “Prince Silnar and the Dark…” by a Canter School student
Second place
- Primary: “The Monster Under Kim’s Bed,” by a Blaine School student
- Intermediate: “The Shadow less Boy,” by a Washington School student
- Upper: “A Guide to Global Warming,” by a Falconer School student
Third place
- Primary: “The Ice Cream Invention,” by a Skinner Classical School student
- Intermediate: “Miley’s Big Election,” by a Dodge School student
- Upper: “Wild Cat,” by a Lavizzo School student
