Chicago students possess remarkable talents both in and out of the classroom. The tools needed for problem solving and analytical research are critical skills that prepare students for both college and career. That is why it gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Whitney M. Young Magnet High School Debate Team on their state championship. Through their competitive spirit and fine work ethic, they embody the spirit of true champions!
Background:
- The debate team defeated perennial debate powerhouse Glenbrook North High School last weekend to become the first CPS school to earn a state championship in the Illinois High School Association Debate.
- Team members are Seniors Hanna Nasser, Marcel Roman, and Sydney Doe; Juniors John Vitzileos and Christian Palacios; and Sophomore Jeron Dastrup. Head Coach is Jeff Scheur and assistants are David Bell, Jonathan Schwartz, Elyse Conklin, and Whitney Young Debate alumnus Kevin Hirn.
- The students advocated an affirmative plan that would have NASA invest in a new generation of environment-monitoring satellites as a way of generating scientific data that can help develop new anti-warming policies.
- Whitney Young Principal is Dr. Joyce Kenner.
