“Congratulations to the Whitney Young High School Academic Decathlon Team for their outstanding State Championship performance this weekend. Their commitment to academic excellence makes all of us at Chicago Public Schools Proud!! We know you will represent CPS well in the national competition April 25-28 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We are equally proud of the Decathletes from Lane Tech High School who finished second statewide. Congratulations to all!”
Facts about the Academic Decathlon:
- Eight CPS schools advanced to the state tournament of Decathlon: Whitney Young (the citywide champion), Lane Tech, Walter Payton, Northside, Chicago High School for the Agricultural Arts, Carl Schurz, Gwendolyn Brooks and Morgan Park.
- CPS students previously competed in two citywide competitions. Citywide winners then progress to the state competition. The culminating event in Decathlon is the national competition where students compete against other state championship teams.
- With more than 500 students competing in this year’s decathlon, the Chicago Public Schools has the largest number of student participants of any school district in the nation.
