The Chicago Public Schools administration has decided to postpone the vote on five new-school proposals submitted through the Renaissance 2010 initiative, likely until the Nov. 19 Chicago Board of Education meeting. None of the proposed schools on which a vote is being delayed are scheduled to open until the fall of 2010. CPS officials want to break up the new-school proposals to allow the Board at its Oct. 22 meeting to focus primarily on the 2009 openings.
The five school proposals that are being delayed are the following:
- Chicago Hope Academy
- Instituto Health Sciences Academy
- Social Justice High School, Pride Campus
- Transportation Academy of Chicago
- Urban Prep Academy for Young Men - South Shore
The Board of Education is still expected to vote at its Oct. 22 meeting on the following new-school proposals, which have fall 2009 openings:
- Alcott High School for the Humanities
- Ogden International High School
- Urban Prep Academy for Young Men, East Garfield Park
- Chicago Academy for Advanced Technology
- Chicago Talent Development High School
- The EPIC Academy
- Noble Street Charter School, Chicago Bulls College Prep campus
- Noble Street Charter School, Muchin College Prep campus
- Garfield Park Preparatory Academy
- South Shore Fine Arts Academy (based on existing South Loop Elementary School)
- Noble Street Charter School Bain-NUSH campus
- Chicago International Charter School, Altgeld Gardens campus
One new-school proposal with a fall 2010 opening is still on the Oct. 22 agenda: Noble Street Charter School-Osborn College Prep campus, which is part of the Noble Street Charter School package that includes two proposals with 2009 openings.
Three organizations recommended to be approved to turn-around up to six struggling schools are still expected to go before the Board on Oct. 22. They are the Academy for Urban School Leadership, Victory Schools Inc., and Chicago RISE.
Also, two new-school proposals were already approved by the Chicago Board of Education in September: UNO Charter School-Gage Park Elementary, which is scheduled to open in 2009, and UNO Charter School-Charter Academy High School, which is scheduled to open in 2010.
