Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and Groupon Grassroots today announced the launch of the second annual partnership campaign allowing Chicagoans to purchase school supply kits online for CPS students in need. Last year, due to the generosity of more than $15,000 in contributions, 1,200 Kits for Kidz were donated for the 2011-2012 school year. Everyone can now visit the Groupon website to purchase $11 back to school kits that provide kids with a year’s worth of school supplies or an $18 option that will provide a kit and a backpack to a child in need. The website can be accessed by following this link to Groupon's website.
“We need everyone’s help in making sure all CPS students are prepared with the tools they need to succeed in school on day one,” said CPS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard. “With just one click, Chicagoans can provide an entire year’s worth of school supplies to a student in need, providing an invaluable gift to many families across Chicago. We are grateful to all citizens who will join us in our effort and to Groupon Grassroots for providing an opportunity for others to give back to our kids.”
The Kits for Kidz campaign will be available through Groupon’s daily e-mail and their website beginning Monday, July 30, through Tuesday, August 7. Partner organizations and CPS will then distribute kits to students and families at neighborhood festivals and back to school events.
More than 80 percent of CPS students qualify for free and reduced lunch (families earning less than $42,000 a year or less) and more than 17,000 CPS students are homeless, making these kits a vital part of helping our students get ready for school on the first day.
CEO Brizard handed out more than 100 Kits for Kidz to students at the CPS back to school kick-off last Wednesday at the Humboldt Park Fieldhouse. One hundred percent of the Groupon Grassroots campaign proceeds will be used to provide school supplies to additional CPS students with Kits for Kidz.
The Groupon Grassroots partnership is part of the CPS back to school campaign’s grassroots approach which aims to mobilize citywide and community based partners to get the word out through a two week blitz prior to the two school start days. Early Start Schools (Track E) begin on Monday, August 13 and Regular Start Schools (Track R) begin on Tuesday, September 4.
Kits for Kidz provide students with more than 30 different types of schools supplies including:
- Spiral Notebooks
- Filler Paper
- Hardcover Pop-Up Book
- Pencil Case
- Crayons, Markers, Paint Set
- Glue Sticks
- #2 Pencils, Pens and Erasers
Chicago Public Schools serves 404,000 students in 675 schools. It is the nation’s third-largest school district.
