April 1st, 2016

Information on contingency sites for students where they will be safe, fed and engaged.

On Friday, April 1, 2016 CTU members will engage in a one-day strike. While some teachers have committed to their classrooms on the 1st, with an undetermined number of staff absences, CPS cannot operate as it would on a regular school day.

For families who do not have the option of keeping their student(s) home or attending a non-CPS facility on April 1, CPS and its partners will operate more than 250 contingency Student Sites across the city that will ensure students are safe, fed, and engaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

What site will my child attend?

To determine the options available for your child, start by entering your address into the Student Site Locator Tool. The Locator Tool will provide you with an elementary and high school option, as well as Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, and Safe Haven sites within a similar area.

If you choose a CPS school site, please use the tool to pre-register your student(s) for the day - and that you're choosing the school option that matches your student's grade level.

For additional assistance, you can dial 311. Please have your address ready when you call.

What time will the sites be open from and to?

  • CPS schools and Chicago Park District sites will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Chicago Public Library sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Safe Haven hours, which are 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

How will these sites be staffed?

Contingency sites will be supported by trained staff from CPS and its partners. Together with CPS Safety and Security, and the Chicago Police Department, these staff members will work to ensure students are safe, fed, and engaged throughout the day on April 1.

Will CPS buses be operating on April 1?

No. Due to the variance of contingency sites, CPS will not be providing bus service to district-run schools on April 1st. However, the CTA is providing free transportation to all CPS students.

Charter school bus service will continue to operate on a normal schedule.

Will CPS continue to provide students with meals during the strike?

Yes. At each contingency site students will be provided with breakfast and lunch.

What about my child's allergies or other health and wellness needs?

All CPS health policies (food allergy, medication administration, asthma, diabetes management, etc.) will be followed.

CPS schools will have on hand the most current 504 plans for students with known medical conditions. Parents are asked to provide documentation of any new diagnoses and/or medication changes. Based upon the 504 plans and any newly obtained information, the appropriate staff member will be notified.

What are the District's plans to ensure special education students are receiving the support needed on April 1st?

There are six specialty school sites designated in the list of CPS school contingency sites. While it is not necessary for parents to utilize these sites for Diverse Learners, there will be options for early childhood, elementary, and high school students.

Additionally, all program site administrators and on-site nurses will have access to student IEPs to ensure appropriate supports are available for students attending the site.

Will scheduled sports practices and other afterschool activities still take place?

No. All after school programming, will be cancelled. (This includes practices and games, per IHSA regulations.) For specific questions on makeup games or events, please contact your coach or event lead.

What type of programming will be offered to students?

With an undetermined number of staff absences due to the strike on April 1, regular classroom instruction will not occur. While we regret the loss in instructional time, students will be engaged through a variety of activities, including online learning opportunities, arts and crafts, physical education, and independent reading/writing activities.

Will CPS have to make up any lost academic days if there is a strike?

No. CPS will still have enough student attendance days remaining in the school year to meet the minimum state requirements for receipt of general state aid.

My student was supposed to take the PARCC exam on April 1. What happens now?

The PARCC exam will not be administered on April 1. Your student's principal will communicate the new testing schedule as soon as it's confirmed.

How can one keep up to date on the latest news and plans that CPS has about the strike?

For the latest news and information regarding the strike, please visit cps.edu. You can also sign up for the latest updates by email at cps.edu/signup.

I am a CTU Member and I want to come to work. Do I have to report to my school?

Any CTU member is welcome to work on April 1, and to do so at either their normal school or a CPS contingency site.

If reporting to their regular school, CTU members should check in with their principal, in addition to following normal swipe in / out procedures to ensure they can be paid for the day. At other CPS sites, CTU members should check in with the principal or designated site leader and follow normal swipe in / out procedures.

Finally, CTU members who are also CPS parents and who report to work at a contingency site on April 1 are welcome to bring their children with them.

Is there a list of all April 1 CPS school locations available?
