Reading List: Grade 1-2

Students in grades 1-2 know how to read, and many can read very well. In this age group students are continuing to develop their understanding of phonics and are learning how to write and spell the words they use every day.

Parents play a valuable role in their child’s reading development. It’s important for parents to read with their child every day, and as he or she improves his or her reading skills, let your child read to you. This allows students to practice reading and re-reading aloud until they can read to the best of their ability.

Summer is a great time to begin developing reading rituals with your child. Take 30 minutes out of every day to sit down and read one of our recommended books together. Most of these books are available at your local public library for free. To check out any of these books all you need to have is a library card. Click on the links below to learn more about each book or download the  2009 summer reading list.
