Reading List: Grade 5-6

Students in grades 5-6 aren’t expert readers yet, but they’re getting close. This is a crucial grade for students as they begin applying reasoning techniques to what they read and write. Here students begin learning how to understand and communicate the meaning of what they’ve read.

You can help your child continue to develop his or her reading skills by incorporating reading into every day activities. Pack books when you go on trips with your child. Have your child keep a journal on family vacations. Select words from a story your child has read and have him/her write a paragraph using those words. Read poems together and ask your child to identify the words that rhyme.

Summer is a great time to begin developing reading rituals for your child. Instead of watching TV, have your child take 30 minutes out of every day to sit down and read one of our recommended books.  Most of these books are available at your local public library for free. To check out any of these all you need to have is a library card . Click on the links below to learn more about each book or download the  2009 summer reading list.
