More Ways To Help Your Child Succeed...

Three types of parent involvement will help your child be successful in school. These are the ways you can improve school performance:

  • Actively monitor and organize your child's time – organize daily and weekly routines and check regularly to see that those routines are being followed. Check daily to see if your child has been assigned homework and allocate a place and time to complete that homework. Limit and reasonably control activities such as television viewing and time spent on the telephone or with video games.
  • Help your child with homework – You can show an interest and take an active role in your child's schooling. Make sure that homework is completed, discuss the assignments, check for quality and accuracy, and show a general concern. Ask questions if you are not familiar with the work and in this way you express how important you feel their homework is to their achievement. In some cases you may even serve as a tutor for your child.
  • Discuss everyday school matters – listen openly to both difficulties as well as successes, and support both areas. Encourage your child to try to solve his or her own problems but make it clear that you will step in if necessary to help him persist in finding solutions.
As your child gets older, peer influence will become stronger but parents can continue to stay involved. Visit the school by attending school events in which your child is participating and always maintain contact with teachers and administrators.
