Overview
The World Language program provides opportunities and resources for all students to become proficient in a language other than English.
Goals
- Develop an ongoing culturally-based curriculum to improve language learning
- Create partnerships with universities and organizations to develop courses for teachers and students
- Integrate technology in the world language classroom
- Provide enrichment programs throughout the school year and summer
- Promote parental involvement through school-based activities
Program Benefits
- Annual surveys are conducted to determine teacher needs
- Maintain relationships with World Language institutes to provide students with opportunities to improve language acquisition and develop cultural appreciation and understanding
Resources
The World Language Program has many resources available to parents, teachers and students within CPS and throughout the City of Chicago. For more information on the programs below contact the Language and Cultural Education Office.
- The Multicultural Resource Center (Roosevelt High School) and the Bilingual Resource Center (Tilden High School) offer teachers and parents ongoing workshops and materials to support instruction and language acquisition.
- Language institutes located in the city offer an array of enrichment programs including language instruction, cultural activities and programs
- Collaborations with governmental agencies (French, Italian and Japanese Consulates) offer a variety of resources that promote cultural awareness
