Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs)

Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) create supportive learning environments that allow an exclusive, designated team of teachers to provide academic support and monitoring to individual 9th-12th-grade students. SLCs offer teachers the flexibility to personalize and tailor their curriculum to address individual student needs, interests and aspirations. As a result, students build stronger relationships with teachers and classmates and maximize their learning potential.

Program overview

Incoming freshmen are placed into houses organized specifically to provide personalized academic support necessary to succeed at all grade levels and stay on track for graduation. Students in grades 10-12 are organized into a variety of thematic SLCs that increase collaboration and integration throughout each student’s educational experience and prepare them for success as productive citizens after high school.

Enrollment

Enrollment in SLCs is non-merit based. Students attending a current SLC school are encouraged to contact their SLC site coordinator, freshman counselor or Freshman Academy lead teacher.

SLCs are available to all students at the following high schools: Amundsen, Chicago Vocational Career Academy, Corliss, Crane Technical Prep, Roberto Clemente, Farragut, Fenger Academy, Foreman, Harlan, Kelvyn Park, Manley, Morgan Park, Robeson, Schurz, Steinmetz, Washington and Wells.

Goals

SLCs aim to:

  • Improve freshmen on-track rates and raise attendance rates
  • Improve student engagement in the learning process
  • Increase student participation in extracurricular activities
  • Improve communication between parents and teachers
  • Improve school climate and culture
