16-inch softball is a game that can be played with your bare hands. One iteration of the game—which uses a ball that is actually soft (to prevent injuries)—was developed in Chicago in the 1930s.
Now several Chicago Public Schools across the District play the game every fall. Our teams are divided into 8 sections (North, South, West, and Central) with a red and blue section in each of the four divisions. Learn more about our unique 16-inch softball program.
Rules and regulations
It’s important for both parents and students to know, and abide by all the rules and regulations set forth by CPS and the National Federation of State High School Associations. These rules are designed to ensure that every team has a fair chance to participate, and to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance at our games.
