Varsity Cheer and Pom-pon

They may spend their time on the sidelines during most athletic events, but it’s their encouragement, support, and perseverance that keep both the team and the fans in the game.

The Spirit Program serves as support groups for all CPS athletic programs, competitions, and other school functions.

The program varies from school to school, but could encompass cheerleading teams, pom-pon teams, and dance teams. The program is only offered at the Varsity level, although underclassmen make up the majority of participants.

The Spirit Program is divided into three seasons: fall, winter, and spring. The number of schools that participate varies depending on the season. On average, during the fall season 69 schools participate; during the winter season 55 schools participate; and during the City Championship 30 schools participate.

City champs

The Chicago Public League only offers a City Championship event. Five divisions can compete for the title:

  • Small cheer includes 8-12 participants
  • Large cheer includes 13-20 participants
  • Small pom-pon includes 8-12 participants
  • Large pom-pon includes 13-20 participants
  • Dance includes 8-20 participants

Over the course of a school year, approximately 1,900 high school student-athletes participate in the Spirit Program.

Rules and regulations

It’s important for both parents and students to know, and abide by all the rules and regulations set forth by CPS and the National Federation of State High School Associations. These rules are designed to ensure that every team has a fair chance to participate, and to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance at our games.

Join the team

Students interested in playing sports should contact the Athletic Coordinator at their school. Your school should be able to provide more information about eligibility and team tryouts.
