The CPS Virtual Learning program offers more than 100 rigorous, but flexible online high school courses (core, credit recovery or electives) for active Chicago Public School students. These courses supplement local school offerings and help students achieve course credit toward graduation. CPS virtual learning courses range from introductory to advanced and cover a wide variety of subjects including English, mathematics, science, history and foreign languages.
Goals
CPS-online courses enable students to:
-
Fulfill or recover core and elective requirements
-
Gain access to courses not offered at their local school
-
Take Advanced Placement (AP) courses
-
Review for AP exam preparation
-
Strengthen communication, collaboration and technical skills needed for long-term success in life
Benefits
The CPS Virtual Learning program has served students since its inception in 2002 and has maintained a student completion and success rate between 75 and 80 percent. With permission from their school, students may be given online access to courses available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. CPS online courses allows students to work at their own pace and caters to their individual needs so that they can remain or get back on-track to graduation. To meet the expanding needs of students, CPS currently uses two vendors for online courses, Aventa Learning and Illinois Virtual High School. Aventa Learning offers a catalog of credit recovery courses and elective options. Illinois Virtual High School offers Advanced Placement, and enrichment courses online.
Enrollment
All CPS students currently enrolled may access online courses with approval from their local schools. For enrollment information, contact your child’s local school counselor, a Virtual Learning Coordinator or mentor, or the CPS-Virtual Learning Program Manager.
