Elementary schoolsThis stage in a child's life is a crucial development step. The foundation for your children’s academic interests and future educational desires are incubating during this time. At CPS, we focus on allowing children to develop social skills as well as cognitive and thinking skills. We strive for academic excellence, and combine the importance of making school a fun environment to learn in. Every elementary school works to understand each child and create an environment where they will "flourish".

School Types

Neighborhood
This is your first option, since they generally serve students who live within a designated attendance boundary.

Academic Centers
Housed in designated high schools for academically advanced students in grades 7-8.

Charter
Open to all Chicago children. These schools operate independently from the Board and each other.

Classical
Designed to provide a challenging liberal arts course of instruction for students with high academic potential.

Contract
Contract schools are public schools open to all CPS students. These schools are operated by private entities under contract with CPS to provide an additional education option for students.

International Gifted Program
Gifted program for academically advanced students in grades 6-8.

Magnet
Specializes in a specific subject area, such as Montessori, International Baccalaureate, math/science, Humanities, or dual language immersion.

Regional Gifted Centers
Provide an accelerated instructional program that place an emphasis on thinking, reasoning, problem solving and creativity.

Small
Fosters environment in which parents, teachers, and students get to know one another well.

Diverse Learners
Schools for students with disabilities who reside in specified geographic locations.

Military Academy
Military Academies prepare students for college and subsequent careers in a structured environment. Serves students in grades 7-12.

Classical
Provides a challenging liberal arts curriculum for students with high academic potential.

Contract
These schools are independently operated by a private entity under contract with the Board of Education. Contract schools are not subject to the same district initiatives and board policies as traditional public schools.

Magnet
Specializes in a specific subject area such as Montessori, International Baccalaureate, math and science, humanities or dual language immersion.

Regional Gifted Center
Provides a highly accelerated instructional program in all subject areas.

Small
These schools limit their student populations to 600. This provides a more intimate and personalized learning experience.

Diverse Learners
Schools for students with disabilities who reside in specified geographic locations. Enrollment is based on students' Individualized Education Program.
