Exploring Our New School Profiles

As you browse our school profiles you may notice that a lot has changed. We’ve made major updates to the data and information included in the profiles to support CPS’ new approach to analyzing school practices and student outcomes. This new approach, called Continuous Improvement and Data Transparency (CIDT), will begin to be implemented in the 2024-25 school year. In addition to the information you’re used to seeing, profiles will now begin to include expanded data about how the District and schools support the whole child.

Here are a few more changes you’ll notice:

Schools are no longer ranked

Instead, school profiles now present a wide range of metrics that describe student achievement, school conditions, and community support.

Metrics are focused on holistic measures of learning and well-being

Inside our school profiles, you’ll find more than just grades and test scores. We have introduced new data about academic progress, school climate, and community engagement to offer a fuller picture of each school's strengths and areas for improvement.

Data is rooted in community input and driven by stakeholder collaboration

The changes to our school profiles are informed by input from more than 21,000 stakeholders. To ensure the profiles are accessible and actionable, a Transparency Committee of parents, staff, and other stakeholders reviews and provides feedback on each metric, which are labeled to reflect the current stage of engagement.

Your voice makes a difference

In addition to our stakeholder engagement, we welcome your feedback, too. Share your thoughts about your experience with our new school profiles.

What We're Measuring

Our new approach to accountability prioritizes the whole child by enhancing teaching and learning environments to support every aspect of a student's development. To analyze these practices, we have organized our metrics into four groups that we use to analyze school practices and student outcomes.

Evidence of Student Learning and Wellbeing

Measuring data about our students’ progress through required testing, English language proficiency, participation, and preparing for life after graduation helps the district direct resources where needed the most. Metrics are updated as information becomes available.

Academic Progress

Student Proficiency: Measures the percentage of students meeting grade-level standards and is based on state-required testing.

Student Growth to Proficiency: Measures the change in average achievement for students from the prior year and progress toward grade-level standards using state assessments.

English Learner Progress to Proficiency: Measures progress toward English proficiency (aiming for proficiency within five years).

On-Track: Measures the percentage of students in grades 3-8 who are on track for high school, and if freshmen and sophomores are on track to graduate in four years.

Growth of Students who Participate in Alternate Assessments: Highlights the importance of tailored support to help each student succeed.

Connectedness and Wellbeing

Chronic Absence: Measures number of students who are regularly absent (10% of school days).

One-Year Dropout Rate: Measures the percentage of students in grades 9-12 who leave school before the end of the year without evidence of graduation or continued enrollment elsewhere.

Postsecondary Success

Graduation Rate: Measures the percentage of students who earn a diploma in four or five years.

Early College and Career Credentials: Measures the percentage of students graduating high school with college credits, industry certifications, or other qualifications.

College Enrollment and Persistence: Measures the percentage of high school graduates who go to college in the fall or spring after high school and continue enrollment into the second year.

Student Access to Learning & Support

Daily Learning Experiences

Measuring data about our students’ day-to-day experiences at school and the quality of the curriculum, instruction, environment, interventions, and individualized support over time helps provide the resources needed to positively impact our students’ growth, learning, and sense of belonging. Metrics are updated as information becomes available.

High-Quality Curriculum: Measures if lessons are aligned to state standards, culturally responsive, relevant, engaging, and empower students to develop critical thinking skills.

Balanced Assessment System: Considers the ways we measure student learning across grade levels, subjects, student abilities, and English proficiency.

Rigorous Instruction: Measures teaching effectiveness and the teacher’s ability to make content accessible to every student.

Conditions for Learning and the Student Experience: Measures the aspects of our schools and student's environments to provide safe, nurturing, and modern classrooms.

Access to Postsecondary Opportunities: Measures how well schools are preparing students for life after high school.

Research-based Academic Interventions within a Multi-tiered System of Supports: Measures how schools are implementing academic, behavior, and social-emotional interventions.

Specially Designed Instruction: Measures how the needs of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are met.

Adult Capacity and Continuous Learning

Measuring data that focuses on how teachers, staff, and administrators have access to supportive and stable leadership, professional development opportunities, and an inclusive environment to excel and grow in their roles contributes to academic progress and a positive and trusting school climate. Metrics are updated as information becomes available.

Leadership Context: Measures the stability of school leadership and their relationships with staff and the school community at large.

School Vision and Continuous Improvement Practice: Reports on each school’s plans, systems, and goals for continuous improvement for student success.

Distributed Leadership and Teacher Leader Development: Measures the engagement and empowerment of teachers, teachers leaders, and staff to perform their roles effectively and grow professionally.

Teachers and Staff Capacity: Measures vacancy rates, teacher qualifications, tenure, and turnover.

Inclusive and Collaborative School and Community

Measuring data that focuses on how schools provide a welcoming environment that supports each student’s physical, social, and emotional health supports the whole child. This also reports opportunities available outside of the classroom for students, families and community members to participate in the school community.

Out of School Time and Enrichment Opportunities: Measures the opportunities available for students to engage in academic, athletic, and arts-based enrichment within their school community and beyond the classroom.

Healing Centered Culture, Supports and Social-Emotional Interventions: Measures the support and interventions students receive in response to their physical, social, and emotional needs.

Inclusive and Collaborative Structures and Involved and Engaged Youth: Measures how schools incorporate student perspectives, participation, and ownership in school decisions.

School and Community Partnerships and Engagement: Measures the number and types of partnerships each school has with community organizations including parent organizations.
