Overview

Dunbar was established as a trade school in 1942 and is located on a 12-acre campus. Students apply to and enroll in one of six College & Career Academy programs of study (chosen during the High School application process): Construction & Architecture, Medical & Health Careers, Allied Health, Culinary & Hospitality, Cosmetology, and Automotive Technology. Our curriculum combines academics and real world experiences. Advanced Placement (AP) classes are offered in English, biology, math, and social studies. The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program is offered.

At-a-glance
Dunbar's Band performed in Washington, D.C., during the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. The band also played in 2005 World Series parade for the Chicago White Sox. Famous graduates are Bernard Shaw, Lou Rawls, Mr. T, and Jennifer Hudson. Mayor and Mrs. Daley have been frequent visitors. Students visited Romania in 2005 and France in 2007.

As of 2008-2009, there were 1612 students enrolled at Dunbar Voc HS. 93.1% were low income Students. 9.7% were Special Education Students. 0.4% were Limited English Learners. As of 2008-2009, the largest demographic at Dunbar Voc HS was Black. As of that time, this demographic made up 98.8% of the student population. The second greatest demographic was Hispanic at 0.8%.
