Overview

Roald Amundsen High School is a neighborhood school with an international flair. Located in the culturally and economically diverse Ravenswood neighborhood, approximately 70 percent of the student body speaks a language other than English at home. This exciting mixture of cultural backgrounds is embraced in all aspects of the school's environment. Amundsen challenges students to reach their fullest potential with a rigorous academic program geared to individual interests. In each case, college preparedness is of primary importance. Amundsen offers a full range International Baccalaureate Diploma and Middle Years Programme. Amundsen is also currently involved in the Smaller Learning Communities (SLC). Choices include the Global Village, Joarndt Urban Mentorship Program(JUMP), and 9th-grade students are all part of the Freshman Academy.

Amundsen's greatest strength is its students. Amundsen's diversity and family atmosphere creates an environment that is both fun and challenging. Amundsen's programs are on par with the highest level of education offered anywhere. Our International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programme offer an academically rigorous program of study.

As of 2008-2009, there were 1630 students enrolled at Amundsen HS. 91.4% were low income Students. 16.4% were Special Education Students. 9.9% were Limited English Learners. As of 2008-2009, the largest demographic at Amundsen HS was Hispanic. As of that time, this demographic made up 64% of the student population. The second greatest demographic was Black at 14.5%.
