Overview

Harlan offers a college prep curriculum and real-world training through College & Career Academies in Pre-Engineering and Information Technology. Outstanding opportunities for learning include Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Smaller Learning Communities (SLC), Freshman Academies, Math-Science-Technology Academy, GEAR UP and the Chicago Police and Firefighter Training Academy (CPFTA). Best practices include brain-compatibility strategies, Cornell notetaking, common planning and assessments, data-driven decision-making, and cooperative learning groups. For the academically gifted, Harlan offers a 7th- and 8th-grade Academic Center, and Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes.

Harlan, whose small size allows for greater personalization, is the only high school in Illinois with the NASA Explorer School program. Initiatives include an interdisciplinary curriculum, teleconferencing, and engaging activities. The engineering component offers students an opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.
