Let’s dance
Elementary students learn classic dance moves through an innovative program.
August 03, 2009

Last fall, CPS launched an elementary dance program designed to keep students’ toes tapping and feet dancing all school year long.

The Elementary Dance Scholarship Program (EDSP) is dedicated to providing 6th-8th grade students with discipline-based, rigorous dance experiences.

The goal of the program is to provide quality dance education activities while also encouraging artistic and academic achievement. The program seeks to provide students with an incentive for staying in school, working hard, and helping them prepare for the transition to high school.

Learning the moves

The program is open to all students who currently participate in the Having a Ball dance program. Students audition to participate, and once selected, meet twice a week, after school at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Lou Conte Dance Studio.

First year students (6th grade) study ballet and ballroom with EDSP's faculty. Additional dance styles may then be added as the students advance through years two and three. Performances include in-studio demonstrations and a presentation at the final Having a Ball program. The program emphasizes achievement both artistically and academically and is provided free of charge to students and schools.

Students meet twice a week, after school for 12-15 weeks. They take dance classes in ballet, ballroom and supplemental styles from 3:45-6 p.m. Periodic dance-related homework assignments are given throughout the program.

Why dance?

Dance is a valuable way to not only improve students’ physical abilities, but to also develop important life skills such as respect, cooperation, problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity and dedication.

The program teaches dance and the numerous skills associated with studying this art form. Students learn how to set high standards for themselves, and work toward reaching their goals.
