The Chicago School Reform Act of 1988 created the concept of Local School Councils (LSCs) to give parents, teachers, community members, and stakeholders a voice in the improvement of their schools at the local level.

The Office of Local School Council Relations provides support and technical assistance to LSCs as they carry out the responsibilities of local school governance in the four principal areas of:

  • Approving the school-based academic plan and continuous work improvement plan (CIWP)
  • Approving the alignment of budgetary resources to the CIWP
  • Engaging in the annual evaluation of contract principal’s professional practices
  • Selecting or renewing contract principals
