CEO Student Advisory Council
The Youth Innovation Fund of Chicago provides action grants to student groups and classrooms
for civic innovation projects and sponsors the first-ever Student Advisory Council to the CEO of
Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The Student Advisory Council, comprised of 19 youth from high schools
throughout the district, brings the voice of CPS high school students to the CPS administration.
The Youth Innovation Fund is directed by the Mikva Challenge, the Constitutional Rights Foundation
Chicago, and the CPS Office of Service Learning.

Community Schools Initiative - Community schools bring together
the academic and social supports needed to ensure that all students succeed by offering programs
before, during
and after the school day for students and their families. The programs are designed to support
the school's academic program and expand the services offered within the community. Programs offered
at each community school vary, but most community schools in Chicago offer some combination of
academic enrichment activities for students, adult education and English as a Second Language classes,
student and adult technology training, art activities, recreation and health services. Through

No Child Left Behind (NCLB): The 'No Child Left Behind' (NCLB) Act is a
federal law passed in January of 2002. Its provisions change the way CPS operates in several key
ways. The Act promotes educational choice in a new way, by requiring school systems to offer parents
in low-performing schools the opportunity to transfer their children to better-performing schools.
However, we have offered "voluntary" choice to all students and roughly a third of our
students have already transferred to non-neighborhood schools, including magnet schools and gifted

Paper Waste Busters: Did you know that CPS used 258,000,000
sheets of paper last fiscal year? All this paper adds up to a lot of money, trees, energy,
and waste. Central Office and its Green Team launched Paper
Waste Busters to reduce our paper use by 20 percent and switch to recycled paper. Departments
