CPS Statement on Passage of SB 231

Today CPS CEO Forrest Claypool issued the following statement on the passage of SB 231:

“The Senate took an important step forward to make sure that students in low-income and minority school districts all over the state get the education that they deserve. Too many districts – including Chicago – are struggling under the weight of Illinois’ last-in-the-nation approach to educating students in poverty. For Chicago students, this moves them toward equality with their peers around the state, since they are 20 percent of the state’s students, but receive only 15 percent of the state’s funding.

On behalf of students in Chicago and across Illinois, we appreciate Senator Manar’s leadership and commitment to fix the state’s broken and racially discriminatory funding formula, and express our thanks to the Senators who voted in favor of this important measure.”
