Board of Education Needs Student Voice

Apply now to be this year’s Honorary Student Board Member

September 23, 2016

“I assume this role as a product of my community. I’m just one face representing the many faces of CPS students, and I am honored and respectful of this privilege.”

This is part of what Cynthia Rodriguez, last year’s Honorary Student Board Member, said to the Chicago Board of Education the first time she joined their ranks. She would go on to attend every Board meeting throughout her senior year of high school, sharing the student perspective on countless issues and mentoring other CPS students who were interested in contributing to education policy.

The Board of Education is now seeking a new student to fill this important role. Applications can be accessed here, and are due no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, October 3.

The Honorary Student Board Member represents the interests and concerns of nearly 400,000 students citywide. Responsibilities include attending monthly Board of Education meetings and participating on the CPS Student Advisory Council. The experience includes a $1,000 college scholarship, and is an excellent leadership opportunity for CPS students.

To be eligible, students must have a GPA of 3.0 or above and an attendance record of at least 90 percent. Applicants must also be serving (or have served) as  a Student Council Officer, Junior Class Officer, Senior Class Officer, or Local School Council student representative, or have shown proven leadership in other areas.

Come be a part of the CPS conversation. Apply now to become the 2016-17 Honorary Student Board Member.
