Section 704.3 | Board Report 88-0622-PO3 | Date Adopted June 22, 1988

Print/Download [ English | Spanish ]

Adopt policy on student alcohol and substance abuse prevention and intervention (kindergarten - grade 12) to provide a school environment free from the influences of alcohol and substance abuse and to provide intervention, when appropriate, to eliminate the negative consequences that alcohol and substance abuse can have on a student's health, well being, and success.

Systemwide procedures will outline prevention, intervention, referral, and support services consistent with the Policy on Student Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention of the Chicago Public Schools and the Uniform Discipline Code of the Chicago Public Schools.

Each local school will have an alcohol and substance abuse prevention and intervention program consistent with the policy of the Board of Education of the City of Chicago and the systemwide guidelines to promote the enhancement of skills, techniques, and general knowledge regarding alcohol and substance abuse prevention and intervention among its staff, students, and parents.

There will be continuing interaction among central, field, and local school personnel; students; parents; community organizations; treatment agencies; attorneys; law enforcement officials; representatives from the Chicago Teachers Union; and representatives from educational, medical, and legal agencies.

Alcohol and substance abuse prevention and intervention programs will be coordinated within the Bureau of Science.

There will be an annual review of the student substance abuse prevention and intervention policy and guidelines.
