Understanding the Challenge
The Tassel Truancy Intervention Program is an online credit recovery/obtainment program designed for chronically absent, off-track seniors who are within 0.5 to 2 credits of graduating. It targets students with unique barriers, such as work or childcare responsibilities, that prevent them from attending school in person. The program provides a direct path to graduation, helping to mitigate the high probability of these students dropping out.
Please note:
- If a student is inactive they must be reenrolled to participate.
- Students remain attached to their home school throughout and after involvement in the Tassel Truancy Intervention Program; they cannot be dropped. Students are enrolled as “secondary students” at their school.
Strategies & Supports
The program requires schools and the Tassel Team to work together to best support a student’s participation in the intervention program. Schools must have staff who can be assigned and fully engaged to enroll a student for participation. For a school to participate in the Tassel Truancy Intervention Program, the student is required to have a referring counselor and a dedicated mentor.
-
School Counselors
The school counselor is responsible for the administrative and academic setup for students, including completing the application, auditing transcripts, selecting classes, and monitoring non-credit graduation requirements. They are also the primary point of contact for the student's home school and must communicate with the family and mentor if a student's progress stalls.
-
Mentor
The mentor, who can be a counselor, ESP, or teacher, is responsible for the day-to-day support of the student's virtual learning. This includes ensuring students are on task, unlocking assessments, and providing assistance with coursework. They must conduct a regular, ongoing progress review, check in with students at least once a week, record contact in a log, and manage course deadlines and extensions.
