Single-Subject Acceleration

Single-subject acceleration is the admission of assigning a student to math and/or reading at the next higher grade level than is typical given the student’s age to provide access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities.

Steps to Apply

The parent/legal guardian completes and submits an online application to the Office of Access and Enrollment during the application window. Review this guide and apply

In order to be considered for Single-Subject Acceleration, the student must meet the following pre-qualifications (no exceptions):

  • Minimum grade point average of 3.75 or better in math/and or reading, per quarter, for the past two school years.
  • Performance in the “Exceeds” test category (or equivalent) from the previous school year on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in the subject(s) in which acceleration is sought (reading and/or math). Eligibility will be determined using the established cut scores for the former Exceeds category. OR Students scoring within the highest decile of their grade level at their school on the previous year's IAR in the subject(s) in which acceleration is sought. Students must also meet grade level standards on the IAR, which means scoring in the Proficient or Above Proficient range.
  • The student must currently be in grades 4-6.

Students who meet the pre-qualifications will be scheduled to take an aptitude test at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Students mist score a minimum of 6 points (out of 8 possible) in order to participate in the final state of the acceleration process.
