Priority Preferences Explained
How it Works
- Check the school’s profile page using the School Search Tool to see if the program you are interested in offers any priority preferences. If a program does not use admissions priorities, it will simply list one priority group called General.
- Check the order of preferences for each program. Programs that use a points-based selection system will show the number of additional points received for a priority.
- Make a list of the programs and any priority preferences your student qualifies for. You will also be able to see this in the application.
- Complete the priority section on your student’s GoCPS application in order to be considered in a priority group. Many families miss this important step and it MUST be completed to be considered.
Types of Choice Program Priority Preferences
An applicant can only be included in the selection process in one priority category. For instance, a student cannot be in both the sibling and the staff preference lottery. If a student qualifies for multiple priorities, they will be added to the highest priority group. Students who are not selected are assigned a waitlist number in that priority queue.
Tiers
Some schools/programs select students based on their tier. Tiers are not the same as a priority preference because everyone has a tier, but they are important to understand for the programs that use them. Every address in the city of Chicago is assigned a tier. Please visit the Tiers page for details on how to find your tier and check the School Profile page to see if tiers applies to a program you’re interested in.
Continuing Programs
Students enrolled in an eighth grade program housed in a high school are guaranteed an offer to continue in the school’s high school program. Applicants will have a guaranteed seat in that ninth grade program as long as they graduate from the school’s eighth grade program.
