Mr. Kurt Gedig, a teacher at Calmeca Academy in Brighton Park, values the connections he’s been able to build with students as a CPS chess coach for the past 20 years. Though he hasn’t been able to hold his typical weekly chess practices in a while, he’s thankful that his nearly 60 chess students have opportunities to continue practicing their skills while at home. In partnership with the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation, students who participate in the CPS Academic Chess Program are able to participate in weekly tournaments to help them continue growing their love for chess.

“I’m grateful for these chess tournaments because I feel my students can really benefit from them and it’s great that they still have these types of opportunities even during this time,” said Mr. Gedig. “My students have expressed so much excitement to participate in these tournaments because this is such a welcome distraction for them.” 

Even though Mr. Gedig hasn’t typically relied on digital tools in the past, since forming relationships through in-person practices has been an important part of his work as a coach, he says he won’t rule out incorporating a digital practice here and there in the future. CPS is also continuing to celebrate its students’ accomplishments through virtual means. Recently, in partnership with Chicago Debates, the district held its first-ever virtual award ceremony to highlight its exceptional high school debaters and debate coaches for another year of hard work. Ricky Cai from Kelly High School received the Community Coach of the Year Award; Mary Beth Hutchinson, a teacher at Senn High School, received the Golden Gavel Award, the highest honor given to a debate coach; and Dailyn D., a student at Lindblom Math and Science Academy, received the Debater of the Year Award. 

“Congratulations to my debate partner, one of my closest friends, and the most hardworking person I know,” said Dailyn’s classmate Cat S.  

While students begin to approach participating in their favorite academic competitions in a new way, the power of these opportunities to help students discover their interests remains just as strong. Being apart from their classmates and friends may be necessary right now, but all it takes is a virtual game of chess to bring them back together.

Cómo los estudiantes de las CPS continúan realizando actividades de enriquecimiento académico en casa

Aunque no ha podido realizar sus típicas prácticas semanales de ajedrez por un tiempo, está agradecido de que sus cincuenta y tantos estudiantes tengan oportunidades de continuar practicando sus habilidades en casa. Generalmente Gedig no ha dependido de herramientas digitales en el pasado, ya que formar relaciones a través de prácticas presenciales ha sido una parte importante de su trabajo como instructor. Las CPS también continúan celebrando los logros de sus estudiantes a través de medios virtuales. Aunque los estudiantes comienzan a participar en sus competencias académicas favoritas de una manera nueva, sigue siendo igual de fuerte el poder de estas oportunidades que los ayudan a descubrir sus intereses. Estar separados de sus compañeros y amigos puede ser necesario en este momento, pero todo lo que se necesita para reunirlos nuevamente es un juego de ajedrez virtual.
