How has the way CPS thinks about discipline changed over the course of your career?

The focus is no longer on being punitive and handing out suspensions. Now, we understand how important it is to address students’ emotional needs and that it’s possible to be stern while still being nurturing.

What is your favorite part of your work?

I am passionate about mental health, and I love watching my students grow and make positive changes. Sometimes it feels like we’re having the same conversations over and over, but then something will click for a student and they’re able to move forward and build positive relationships.

What message do you want to send to your students?

I always have your best interest at heart, and I am always coming from a place of love. I care about you and I am here for you.

As we head into the new year, what is one thing you want to work on?

I am working on training a group of seventh grade students to become junior restorative justice coordinators. This is similar to a peer counseling program. I try to practice peace circles with them regularly to encourage them to be positive role models for their peers. It’s moving slowly right now, but I’m hoping to perfect the program this year before the students enter eighth grade.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love spending time with my family. I also like RV-ing, and I hope to upgrade our mobile home and visit Arizona very soon!
