Take Five is a series that highlights some of the many members of the CPS community who are going above and beyond for our schools.

Meet Ms. Angela Gilliam, a middle school Science teacher at Ronald Brown Academy! Ms. Gilliam has taught in the district for about 30 years, following in the footsteps of her older sibling, a school administrator, and the teachers who inspired her when she was a CPS student herself.

“Being a product of CPS, I knew there was no other place I wanted to teach,” says Ms. Gilliam. “Growing up with few resources, my family and teachers were the ones who really inspired me to get to where I am now. I teach to make a difference in children’s lives.”

Ms. Gilliam’s school community describes her as a compassionate person with a passion and dedication for teaching. Her nurturing character is reflected in the school’s community garden, a program she helps run, with support from students, staff, and the broader community. Ms. Gilliam hopes the garden is teaching her students how to be responsible, to work as a team, and to care for living organisms.

What do students learn by working in the community garden?

Our school garden gives students the opportunity to learn about a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. We have students as young as preschool participating in the Brown Gardeners, where they’re paired with middle school students who mentor and teach them to grow in the garden. Our school has become food-certified, and we’ve worked with community partners on opportunities like a cooking class, where a chef teaches students about nutrition using the produce they grow. We even have families and community members involved, who often visit the garden on weekends or during breaks to lend a helping hand!

What is one of your goals for students inside the classroom?

One of my goals is for my students to have lifelong experiences. I want them to understand that they can be and do anything. I aim to provide them with experiences, such as coding or gardening, that will help them explore their career options early on in life.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is just seeing my kids grow. Experiencing those light-bulb moments when they finally understand something, and seeing the joy that comes with it. I also love when younger students come to me, excited about middle school and the programs or projects they’ll be able to participate in once they get there.

What is your message to your school community as we wind down the school year?

Do your best work, take risks, learn from your mistakes, and treat people and things with care. If you fall down, get back up and try again. Never let your circumstances define your future. Keep believing in yourself, work hard, stay kind, and dream big!

What do you do when you’re not at Brown?

I spend seven days a week, twice a day, feeding and capturing stray animals. Literally every day of the week; holidays, summer break, Christmas break, it doesn't matter. I'm here at the school and at other locations, feeding stray cats and dogs. One parent gifted me a plaque for Teacher Appreciation Week, acknowledging my work teaching and feeding the animals in our community, so it’s nice to know my efforts don’t go unnoticed!
