Highlighting the Special Bond between a Member of the CPS Class of 2025 and her Special Education Teacher

Mrs. Margaret Graham, a special education teacher at Langston Hughes STEM Elementary School, first met Laciana back when she was in sixth grade. At first, she just witnessed her from afar because she wasn’t one of the students on her caseload. However, after she was added to her caseload, she got to know her more. 

She describes Laciana as rambunctious and a sweetheart. When she first met her, Mrs. Graham notes that Laciana sometimes had trouble managing her emotions. Over time, Laciana evolved in her self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, all while navigating the challenges and opportunities of the educational environment.

Academically, Laciana has made it a goal to be included in the general education classroom as much as possible. Thanks to her hard work and dedication, that goal has become a reality. 

Now that her time in elementary school is winding down, Mrs. Graham has also been encouraging her about her next steps. 

“When she gets to high school, I hope that Laciana finds an adult whom she can attach herself to, someone who can support her in the moments when she needs academic or emotional support,” said Mrs. Graham. “What I want for Laciana is a learning environment where, regardless of her background or abilities, she feels valued, respected, and has equal educational opportunities despite her learning disability.” 

“I wish I had more students like Laciana.  She has done a great job in changing the trajectory of her social-emotional journey in a positive way. I have had the privilege to witness her progression, and it has made me proud.”

What are some of your favorite memories of being a student at Langston Hughes? 

Last year, I got to work with my favorite teacher. It was fun in her classroom all the time. I’d put on music and start dancing, and show her the dances that I learned with her. And we also played a math game called Integer Cards that I loved. 

Can you share more about your interests both inside and outside of the classroom? 

I have a lot of interests. I like singing, dancing, cheerleading, and volleyball. I thought volleyball was really hard until I started playing it, and now I love it. I actually like all types of sports. 

What is the top thing you’re looking forward to about high school? 

Making new close friends, having fun, and doing my work. 

What advice would you give to the future eighth-graders at Langston Hughes? 

Be good to my favorite teachers. You could even strike a deal with the teachers, like, if you’re good for a whole month, maybe you deserve a pizza party.
