28 May 2025

Joeli is a prominent leader in her school community and is known for her positivity and drive.

Prieto ES 2025 Graduate

Schools across the district are celebrating their soon-to-be Class of 2025 graduates, and Joeli is among the best. She has been a member of the Prieto school community since kindergarten, describing her experience as one filled with love and support from both students and staff. Joeli is a prominent leader in her community, excelling at the top of her class while leading various sports teams and student initiatives like the school’s Coffee Club and Leader in Me team.

“Joeli’s graduation story is exceptional because she embodies what it means to lead with purpose, integrity, and heart,” says Principal Kenneth Cuellar. “Her positivity, drive, and leadership inspire her peers and staff alike. Joeli has truly discovered her voice and passion for leadership at our school, and we are incredibly proud.”

After graduation, Joeli looks forward to attending Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in the fall. While a career as a lawyer would be ideal for her, she knows she will be happy with whichever path she pursues, as long as she continues to help others and make a difference in her community and beyond. Learn more about Joeli below!

What are your interests both inside and outside the classroom?

My strongest subject would definitely be reading. I love to read; reading a book is like watching a movie. I also love writing, whether fictional stories, nonfiction stories, or essays. One of my favorite things to do outside the classroom is play sports. I am extremely athletic and love playing volleyball, flag football, baseball, and softball.

Is there a teacher at Prieto whom you know you’ll never forget?

One of my favorite teachers is Mr. Gray; he is amazing. Not only has he helped guide me academically, but he has also provided social-emotional support and helped me navigate who I am as an individual and who I want to be as a leader.

How do you feel about attending high school in the fall?

I'm very excited about high school, but at the same time, I am nervous about the academics. I've always considered myself an academically exceptional scholar, so going into high school, especially a selective enrollment school like Whitney Young, makes me a little nervous about the struggles I will have to overcome. Although I feel a bit of pressure, I know I’m ready. I’m excited to start fresh in a new environment with new people with similar passions and goals, and try out high school sports.

What will you miss the most about Prieto?

I will miss my favorite thing about Prieto, which is our school community and the comfort and care they brought me. I will miss having my teachers constantly supporting me and cheering me on in life at this school, but I know that regardless of where I go, they'll still be rooting for me. Another thing I'm going to miss is having my dad working at the same school. He's amazing and has helped coach every sports team I've been on without having to; I look up to my father’s willingness to help shape children’s lives, and I'm going to miss him very much.

What advice would you give to future 8th graders?

I know that 8th grade is a stressful year, especially going into high school. While it will be one of the most stressful things you go through this year, I want future eighth graders to know that it’s not about what school you attend, but what you do during your time at that high school. It's about whether or not you're trying your best and giving it your all. Keep your head up and enjoy your time as an 8th-grader, because it goes by fast.
