Administrator Professional Learning

The CPS Department of Arts Education offers a wide range of arts-focused professional learning throughout each school year to address the needs of our administrators, educators, and partners. Below, administrators can explore resources from Summer Leadership Institute sessions as well as other archived sessions, and link to other arts professional learning opportunities that we provide to CPS educators.

Summer Leadership Institutes (Archive)

Every year, the Department of Arts Education presents arts-focused sessions for CPS administrators at the Summer Leadership Institute. Slide decks, handouts, and video recordings from previous years are archived below.

2020 Summer Leadership Institute

At the 2020 Summer Leadership Institute, the Department of Arts Education presented several sessions on SEL and arts integration for student and teacher well-being. Download the resources here:

Arts & SEL Integration for Well-Being: Self-Awareness through Visual Arts

In this session, school leaders:

  • Engaged in art-and-SEL integrated activities to build identity, community, and relationships and to practice self-awareness
  • Walked away with arts-forward, SEL-building activities and routines to use at the schoolwide and classroom level
  • Took advantage of space and time to attend to their own social-emotional wellbeing

Arts & SEL Integration for Well-Being: Self-Management through Dance

In this session, school leaders:

  • Engaged in dance-and-SEL integrated activities to build identity, community, and relationships and to practice self-management
  • Walked away with arts-forward, SEL-building activities and routines to use at the schoolwide and classroom level
  • Took advantage of space and time to attend to their own social-emotional wellbeing

Arts & SEL Integration for Well-Being: Relationship Skills through Theatre

In this session, school leaders:

  • Engaged in theatre and SEL - integrated activities to build identity, community, and relationships and to practice interpersonal skills
  • Walked away with arts-forward, SEL-building activities and routines to use at the schoolwide and classroom level
  • Took advantage of space and time to attend to their own social-emotional wellbeing

2019 Summer Leadership Institute

At the 2019 Summer Leadership Institute, the Department of Arts Education presented several sessions on quality arts education and arts integration. Download the resources here:

Come Together: Creating School-Wide Conditions for Quality Arts Integration
In this session, administrators learned the Department’s definition of arts integration, reflected on their own school’s readiness to implement successful arts integration, and engaged in arts integration starter strategies promoting communication, collaboration, and innovation.

Wave Goodbye to the Hand Turkey: Student-Centered Teaching and Learning in the Arts
In this session, administrators explored the key components of the updated Illinois Arts Learning Standards and how they impact and shift arts education in schools, and engaged in and analyzed hands-on artmaking to internalize best practices in standards-based arts teaching and learning.

2018 Summer Leadership Institute

At the 2018 Summer Leadership Institute, the Department of Arts Education presented a session on the updated Illinois Arts Learning Standards.

Leading the Shift: Implementing the Updated Illinois Arts Learning Standards in Your School
In this session, administrators became familiar with the updated Illinois Arts Learning Standards, explored how the standards necessitate key shifts in arts teaching and learning, and learned techniques for supporting teachers as they align their curriculum, instruction, and assessment to the standards.

Creative Compass Program (Archive)

Our 2016-17 Creative Compass Program helped CPS assistant principals expand their leadership skills and arts experience while learning strategies for moving their schools up the Creative Schools Certification ladder. 

Other Arts Professional Learning for Educators

Every school year, the CPS Department of Arts Education offers a number of engaging professional learning events in a variety of formats, tailored to the needs of our arts educators and partners.

Administrators are encouraged to send their arts teachers to these learning events and are also welcome to attend.
