Visual Arts Grade 2

The Grade 2 Visual Arts curriculum guides students through a sophisticated year of study that transitions from personal memory to critical global awareness, emphasizing the power of art to amplify student voices. The journey begins with “Tangled Threads,” where students explore fiber arts—weaving, stitching, and patchwork—to preserve personal and community memories through tactile storytelling. This sense of identity expands in “Quiet Landscapes, Loud Voices,” as students move into abstraction, learning that bold color choices and sweeping movements can communicate "loud" emotions and narratives even within "quiet" landscapes. As the year progresses, the focus shifts to “Practicing Art Criticism,” a unit that equips students with the vocabulary to decode the semiotics of art, allowing them to interpret the stories of others and refine their own artistic intentions through a critical lens. The year reaches a joyful and community-centered peak with “Persistence through the Art Process,” where students engage in collaborative group projects that celebrate the "swagger" and "vibrancy" of their collective identities. By synthesizing advanced skills like appliqué, layering, and symbolic composition with social-emotional growth, students emerge not just as makers, but as confident critics and collaborators who understand art as a vital tool for equity, honor, and shared human experience.
