Visual Arts Grade 5

In Grade 5, students evolve from being observers of art to active advocates and symbolic storytellers who understand the profound impact of visual communication on society. The year begins with “Power to the People,” where students find joy in their own agency, learning technical skills in value studies, tints, and shades to create persuasive advocacy art that speaks to community issues.

This outward focus shifts to “Spaces and Place,” exploring how 3D forms and public art can transform and honor shared community environments. The curriculum then turns toward more personal narratives in “Journeys,” where students apply principles of symmetrical and asymmetrical balance to tell poignant stories of immigration, memory, and transformation.

Finally, the year concludes with “Symbolism, More Than Meets the Eye,” a sophisticated unit where students synthesize rhythm and unity to communicate complex personal identities through unique, non-literal symbols. Throughout this progression, students engage deeply with cultural relevancy—from social justice to global heritage—developing a mature artistic voice that balances technical proficiency with a joyful sense of community responsibility.
