Skyline has foundational skills instruction in grades K-5 that follows the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) approach of sequential and systematic teaching of phonics and fluency skills. There are daily routines that allow for decoding through word sorts and fluency readers, as well as opportunities for encoding through dictation and spelling assessments. The phonics and fluency skills that are learned in Word Study are transferable to other aspects of the literacy block (interactive read aloud, independent reading, and writing).
Pre-K Foundational Skills
In SY24, a Pre-K Foundational Skills Supplemental Curriculum will be available to schools with pre-k programs. This is a supplemental resource designed to support students in developing the necessary early literacy skills essential for success in kindergarten.
The Pre-K Foundational Skills Curriculum includes eight units, each with 4-5 weeks of instruction. Each week includes three, 10-15 minute whole group lessons and three small group lessons. A draft of the Pre-K Foundational Skills Scope and Sequence is available for review.
The Pre-K Foundational Skills Curriculum is based on the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards and aligns with the Skyline Kindergarten Foundational Skills Curriculum. Please reach out to oece@cps.edu with questions about this resource.
