Course Overview
Democracy depends on an involved populace. Young people who can answer the Participate course’s Essential Questions will, we believe, have taken the first steps toward active and informed participation in our democracy. They will understand foundational concepts, like democracy, power, and participation. They will know how to use and create media. They will understand the significance of elections in a democracy and know how they can participate—by voting, running for office, campaigning, helping inform and register other voters, and more. They will recognize why public policy is important and have the knowledge and skills needed to analyze policy and influence policymakers. Finally, they will be familiar with the work of activists and social movements and have considered what issues and problems would motivate them to work for change as an activist.

Introducing the Revised Skyline Social Science Curriculum
Starting in Fall 2026, new units will be posted in Safari Montage, linked to here. Timing will allow teachers to review and backwards plan.
Expect stronger alignment to the CPS Social Science Culturally Responsive Inquiry Arc Framework, a cross-disciplinary approach with Skyline ELA, and improvements based on teacher and student feedback.
