Planning Rationale
The computer classroom is dedicated to instruction on computers. Equipment used are either desktops or laptops/tablets based on Principal guidance. There are no standardized testing requirements for the computer labs that should impact the layout of this space. Classes taught within these computer classrooms are typically Computer Science classes, Programming, Data Science, Cyber-Security, and Physical Computing.
Design Considerations
Location
When more than one computer classroom is provided, they shall be dispersed throughout the building in a manner that gives equity to students. Historically, one computer lab has been provided at each floor level. With the move towards wireless computers for testing, some schools opt for fewer computer classrooms.
Classroom Layout
As a guiding principle, the computer classroom should actively facilitate teacher-student and student-student interaction and collaboration regardless of the technology utilized.
- Typically, the Teacher’s Desk is located closest to one door.
- Hard-wired infrastructure provided at the perimeter of the classrooms. Classrooms shall be set up with rows of hard-wired computers on tables. Computer tables shall be powered from the wall, and shall feature methods to manage wires.
- Student workstations should have a perpendicular orientation to exterior/window walls to reduce glare on computer screens from the windows.
- Many classrooms are opting to not have hard-wired computers but rather laptops/tablets. This allows for a flexible and collaborative space where furniture is not dependent on tables and power.
