Planning Rationale
The Flexible Performing Arts Classroom is a Performing Arts Classroom that allows for students to learn, practice and perform dance and theater. This space can transform into (2) typical classrooms If needed in the future.
Design Considerations
Location
Ideally, this classroom shall be located on the first floor. As noise and vibration are produced in this space, ensure noise and vibration isolation are addressed horizontally and vertically in the space so that sounds and vibrations are not transferred through the structure. An acoustical consultant shall be engaged to ensure adequate separations will be achieved. Privacy and modesty shall be taken into consideration and there shall be no direct view of the occupants from the exterior or within the school.
Classroom Layout
The room is based on the equivalent size of two standard classrooms.
- One wall shall be wall to wall mirrors that includes a multi-height dance barre - permanently attached to the wall
- A second wall of mirrors and dance barres located perpendicular to the primary mirror wall is encouraged.
- A ceiling track with a curtain shall be installed in front of all four walls installed a minimum of 3’ from the wall to allow for movement behind the curtains. This provides the ability to cover mirrors if not wanted and provide extra acoustical performance.
- Room to be open and clear of obstructions; no structural elements, casework or furniture shall be placed in this classroom. Portable bars may be used for flexibility.
- Primary teaching wall shall be planned on the remaining open wall perpendicular to the primary mirror wall.
- Separate means of egress must be provided per standard classroom design parameters for both the open and subdivided scenarios.
- All supporting power, data, MEP/FP and security provisions shall be provided for each of the subdivided spaces to operate in a separate, independent and stand alone configuration.
- The provision for operable/accessible windows shall be provided for each of the subdivided spaces.
- Optimally located near drinking fountains in corridor.
- See 3.1.1 Grades 1-8 Classroom for additional requirements.
Storage
To be provided directly adjacent to the classroom. Items to be provided but not limited to:
- Stackable chairs
- Cubbies for student use for personal belongings during class
- Rolling garment racks for costume storage
- Lockable cabinets
