Window Shades
Window coverings selected to control natural daylight are to be installed in most rooms except for toilet rooms and aquatic centers (refer to room data sheets). The degree of window shade opacity is dependent upon the function of the space. The appearance of windows from the exterior of the building shall be taken into account when designating window coverings. Windows that occur within an exterior building material or volume ideally will have the same window covering for a unified look.
Clutch Operated Roller Shades:
- Mesh fabric roller shades: 3% or 5% openness. Chain retention clips shall be coordinated with the drawings. Fascia panels are optional.
- 3% translucent to be used to minimize solar gain and glare (example: South and West facing windows)
- 5% translucent to be used where more light is desired (example: North and East facing windows)
- Room Darkening Shades: With improvements to technology, room darkening shades are not typically required for rooms needing projection, however, they are required at all gymnasium and theatrical spaces.
- Dual Shade (Mesh Fabric Roller Shade and Room Darkening Shade): Provided in Sensorial Space, Student Services Suite and select CTE spaces.
- Customizing Window Coverings: These are not permitted.
- Installation: Unless installing room darkening shades, all installations must be within the limits of the window jambs.
Motorized Roller Shades:
- Manual vs Motorized: Typically, shades are manually operated; motorized shades shall be used in spaces with upper height windows of 2-story spaces such as gymnasia’s, dining spaces and libraries. Motorized shade controls shall be stand alone, line voltage.
- Installation: Unless installing room darkening shades, all installations must be within the limits of the window jambs.
Trim
Other than the window sills identified below, all new construction window openings shall be devoid of trim.
Interior Sills
½” thick solid surface window sills shall be used at all new window openings or existing window openings requiring sill replacement.
