1.2.4 Community Based Program

School Based Health Centers

School-Based Health Centers are like a doctor’s office, in schools. There are 33 School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) in Chicago that provide services that include but are not limited to: immunizations, physical exams, sports physicals, behavioral healthcare, chronic condition management, and acute care. Some SBHCs are available to the community and to neighboring schools. Plans for new SBHCs or improvements to existing clinics must be reviewed and approved by CPS to ensure adherence to CPS guidelines and standards.

Design for new or renovated SBHCs should consider, at a minimum, logistics to ensure student safety, separation of the school and SBHC, dedicated separate SBHC access for the community and the school, and mechanical systems coordination.

Other Community Based Programs

CPS offers additional community based programs such as Space to Grow and Kitchen Community which are discussed in Volume 3, Chapter 1.
