2.3.6 Locker Rooms

Locker Rooms

Locker Rooms:

Locker Room renovations can occur independently or as part of larger renovation projects, often coinciding with other work associated with athletic spaces. Existing Locker Rooms shall be evaluated for condition, accessibility and quantity. Locker Room (including changing areas and associated shower and toilet areas) alterations shall comply with accessibility requirements. For all new and renovated Locker Rooms, follow Chapter 4.7.6; Lockers, follow the New Construction Guidelines: Volume 3, Chapter 2.2.3 Corridors and Chapter 2.3.4 Specialties.

Additional considerations for existing Locker Room renovation shall include but are not be limited to:

Locker Area:

  • Lockers:
  • Paint/Refurbish: Paint shall be electromagnetic coating where painting is required on existing metal lockers.
  • Replacement: Locker replacement is not required unless lockers are in very poor condition or if there is a total renovation of the Locker Room. May include full or partial replacement. Lockers adjacent to shower areas shall be solid plastic lockers.
  • Accessibility: The lockers shall meet accessibility requirements, including a minimum of 5% of ADA compliant lockers. Accessible lockers should be distributed throughout the area to the extent possible, but they must be located on an accessible route and must have clear floor space for forward or side approach.
  • Benches: Compliant accessible benches must be provided. At least one or 5% of the benches. The benches should be located in the same area as the accessible lockers, to the extent possible.
  • Changing Area: If a Locker Room is renovated and does not include a single all gender changing room/area, one shall be provided. Entry to this space shall not appear to be associated with either the men’s or women’s locker rooms, but shall be located immediately adjacent to the locker room grouping.

Shower Areas:

  • Refer to ADA Standard Detail Sheets ADA.13 and ADA.14.
  • When possible, reconfigure for private stalls
  • If existing shower stalls are depressed below the main floor level, or include curbs, modifications to the shower room floor shall be required for accessibility.
  • Floors shall be sloped to drain without compromising accessible route and maximum slope requirements.
  • Compliant accessible benches must be provided. At least one or 5% of the benches. The benches should be located in the same area as the accessible lockers, to the extent possible.

General:

  • Where there is limited repair scope to existing wall finishes consisting of structural glazed tile, glazed brick, glazed block, or ceramic tile, every effort shall be made to maintain the original construction and finishes.
    • Remove existing anchors, patch any surface damages up to 1” in diameter. Larger areas of damage shall be replaced with new materials.
