End of Week Message: Shaping our City’s Future Teachers

Dear CPS Colleagues, Families, and Supporters,

I want to start today by wishing our District’s more than 700 crossing guards a Happy Crossing Guard Appreciation Month! 

This celebration runs from February 14–March 14 in Chicago, and is a perfect opportunity to thank the people who come out every day, no matter the heat, cold, rain, or snow, to make sure students get across our city’s busy streets safely on their way to and from school.

Please use this form to nominate a crossing guard in your life for the District’s Crossing Guard of the Year Award, and please take a couple minutes during the next few weeks to let our crossing guards know how much we value their service. 

Introducing Chicago’s Emerging Educators

As an eighth-grader at Jane Addams Elementary, Luke Jackson loved volunteering in his school’s kindergarten classroom. Kids would get excited when he walked in, and he had a knack for grabbing and keeping their attention. 

“I come from a long line of educators,” says Luke. “It’s literally in my blood on both sides of my family.”

His experience working with the kindergarten students at Jane Addams is what first got Luke thinking about a career in teaching—a plan that began officially taking shape during his senior year at Bogan High School when he entered the Teach Chicago Tomorrow (TCT) Program four years later.

Open to current 12th-graders and recent CPS graduates, TCT provides aspiring educators with the supports and resources they need to complete a bachelor’s degree in education and hopefully return to our classrooms as CPS teachers. Benefits include academic support while in college, career counseling within the education space, and financial support, including scholarships that are exclusive to students enrolled in TCT partner schools. 

“We have both two and four-year pathways for our students,” says Arthur Dennis, Recruitment Specialist for TCT. “Some students start out at one of our partner universities right away, while others complete their first two years at the City Colleges of Chicago, then transfer to a four-year school to complete their degree.”

TCT has a strong partnership with City Colleges, as well as with Northeastern, Roosevelt, Illinois State University, and beginning next school year, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

“Students who are part of TCT can attend any college they like,” says Art. “But by attending our partner schools, they can take advantage of opportunities specifically designed for the students in our program.”

Regardless of the school they choose, TCT participants receive year-round support, beginning the summer after they graduate from high school. Summer opportunities include time spent bonding with their fellow TCT members, mentoring from education professionals, and paid internships working with youth.

Luke, who is now a freshman at Truman College, spent the summer after high school learning animation, then teaching those skills to kids in Chicago’s Boys and Girls Clubs. 

At the same time, Yehiri Gonzalez—the focus of this week’s Take Five Profile below—has spent her summers working as a wildlife educator at Lincoln Park Zoo and supporting students academically as a member of the CPS Tutor Corps. 

Now a junior at Illinois State University, Yehiri graduated from Lane Tech High School in 2020 and is a member of the first-ever TCT cohort. She looks forward to serving as a bilingual education teacher in CPS, where she believes that her unique experiences, including as a member of Chicago’s Latino community, will be an asset to her future students.

“I used to be really shy about talking about my life and some of the harder experiences I’ve gone through,” says Yehiri. “But TCT has helped me learn how important it is to see my background as a strength.”

To Yehiri’s point, one of the goals of Teach Chicago Tomorrow is to recruit and develop educators of color who our students can identify with, and who share some aspects of their life experience. One of the most powerful ways to do this is by cultivating the talent that already exists within our schools, which is exactly what TCT seeks to do. 

The next TCT cohort begins in July of 2024, and the deadline to apply is April 26. This program is open to all members of the Class of 2024, as well as CPS students who graduated between 2019–2023. Students and alumni who are interested in the program should fill out the program interest form and sign up for an upcoming virtual information session.

Less than a year from now, members of the first TCT cohort will be student-teaching in our schools and preparing to take charge of their own classrooms. I feel confident that this program will have prepared them well, and I look forward to the impact they will have on our next generation of CPS students.

Take Five with Yehiri Gonzalez: Teach Chicago Tomorrow Scholar

Take Five is a series that highlights some of the many members of the CPS community who are going above and beyond for our schools. If you know someone who is making a difference, nominate them to be featured here. 

This week, we’re thrilled to spotlight Yehiri Gonzalez: CPS graduate, aspiring bilingual elementary teacher, and member of the first-ever Teach Chicago Tomorrow cohort! 

Yehiri is currently a junior at Illinois State University, but she first heard about Teach Chicago Tomorrow when she was still in high school at Lane Tech College Prep. She was immediately interested; Yehiri has always wanted to be a teacher, and there has never been any question about the fact that she wants to teach in CPS. 

Throughout her time with the program, Yehiri has fully immersed herself in every opportunity available to her, and this wide range of experience has given her valuable knowledge and helped her explore what exactly she wants to do in the future. Currently, Yehiri is busy becoming a short-term substitute teacher and getting hands-on classroom experience during her clinicals!

What has been the best part so far of your experience with Teach Chicago Tomorrow?

Getting to work with students right away. I was a little scared at first, because I had heard of people in other programs getting no experience working with kids until it was time to student-teach and needing to build that whole skill-set in a very short amount of time. However, I think Teach Chicago Tomorrow has done an excellent job at connecting us with opportunities to work with students throughout the whole program. The program has also really helped me come out of my shell.

Staff Spotlights

National School Counseling Week may be behind us, but we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to highlight the awesome counseling team at Chicago Academy High School. They are known as a group that takes care of both the heads and the hearts of its students and staff through a focus on social-emotional support, post-secondary planning, and academic counseling. 

And we also want to recognize the fantastic work of social worker Ms. Jereece Brown. She has worked for CPS for 30 years. As a school social worker, she is responsible for coordinating services for students to ensure their needs are met. Her colleagues describe her as a loving and caring person who goes out of her way to help students with mental health, social-emotional well-being, and academic pursuits.

A Look Around the District 

Disney II Magnet School in the Old Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago kicked off Black History Month with their “My Block, My Hood, My City” event with special guest speaker Jahmal Cole, whose message for students was to choose to do what would elevate them in the right direction and to always help their community. 

Whitney Young High School, located in the Near West Side community, hosted students and staff from RDFZ, this school associated with Renmin University of China. During the visit, students from both schools performed in celebration of the Lunar New Year and were accompanied by the Chinese Consul General in Chicago. 

At Curie HS in Archer Heights, the Black Student Union hosted its inaugural Black History Month community celebration. The celebration featured fellowship, fashion, and food that represented a variety of pan-African cultures.

Students at Beasley Elementary, located in the Washington Park neighborhood, attended their “It’s All About Love” themed dance. The event was hosted as part of an Attendance Challenge incentive that celebrated students with 98% or better attendance. 

At Von Steuben High School in North Park, the school’s Band Director, Mr. Taylor, hosted an African Drum Circle for students and staff in honor of Black History Month. 

Nettelhorst Elementary in Lake View East celebrated the Spring Festival, with a weeklong celebration of the YUAN Asian Arts Festival. The festival educated students about the holiday and the 1,500 year old history of Chinese art through theatrical and art workshops. 

North-Grand High School, located in Hermosa, recently hosted the second part of the CPS State Qualifier First Robotics event. Click here to witness many remarkable teams navigate through a series of challenges, showcasing the spirit of innovation.

And at Richardson Middle School in West Lawn, students celebrated Black History Month with various activities like creating a Periodic Table of Prominent African Americans, studying the photography of Gordon Parks, and displaying banners and decor throughout the school. 

Two CPS Teachers Named Finalists for Illinois Teacher of the Year Award

Congratulations to Mashanda Scott, a 5th-grade teacher at Clara Barton Elementary, and Michelle Zurita-Sharpe, a pre-k special education teacher at Blair Early Childhood Center, on being among the 13 finalists statewide for the Illinois Teacher of the Year Award—the top honor for teachers in the state of Illinois. An additional 12 CPS teachers and Educational Support Personnel were also among the winners of this year’s “Those Who Excel” Awards.   

Presented by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards celebrate incredible classroom teachers, administrators, teams, volunteers, and school support personnel who have made lasting impacts on the students, families, and fellow educators in their school communities.

A Historic Week for CPS Sports

On February 14, 2024, history was made as High School Girls Flag Football was officially sanctioned by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). The first state series will be held in the fall of 2024. Learn more here about how the league, started by Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Bears in 2021, has now flourished into an official IHSA sport.

In addition, the Chicago Public League hosted its annual Championship Week Feb. 5–10 at Credit Union 1 Arena on the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago, crowning champions in all of its basketball divisions.

Announcing Black Student Success Community Roundtables 

This school year, CPS has created a Black Student Success Working Group to develop a plan to support Black students in achieving increased academic success. This working group will be hosting seven upcoming community roundtables to gather feedback and discuss their potential recommendations. 

• Tuesday, March 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will be held on the North Side 
• Wednesday, March 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will be held on the South Side 
• Thursday, March 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will be held on the West Side

Partnership Helping CPS Schools Go Green

We are excited to share that CPS has now joined the Healthy Green Schools & Colleges (HGSC) program, which provides school facility leaders with resources to improve indoor air quality and transform the health and sustainability of school and university environments. HGSC offers professional development and education programs; a network to accelerate the adoption of best practices; a certification standard and implementation guidelines; and public recognition of districts and higher education institutions that achieve success when it comes to health and sustainability. 

Parents and Guardians: Remind Your Students to Share Thoughts on their School Facilities

Students in grades 9–12 received a brief survey in their CPS emails this week about the state of their school facilities. Parents and guardians—please urge your children to complete this survey so that we can better understand what investments our students would like to see made in their schools moving forward and use that feedback to help shape our next Educational Facilities Master Plan. The deadline to complete this survey is Friday, February 23.

Take the CPS School Food Survey

The District’s Annual School Food Survey is open through March 1, 2024. This is an opportunity for our families, and especially our students, to share how they feel about the food being served in their schools each day. The survey takes just a few minutes to complete, and includes questions about what foods students like, what they don’t like, and what might improve the school meal experience.

FAFSA Applications Now Open for Class of 2024 Students

The Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) is now open. Completing the FAFSA can result in a student receiving up to $7,395 in federal Pell Grant funding for college, and up to $8,400 in MAP Grant funding if a student chooses to attend college in the State of Illinois. The Alternative Application, which provides MAP grant funding to undocumented Illinois residents, is also open and available to all eligible students. CPS has recently updated its Financial Aid Application webpage with the most current information; click here for more details on applying for financial aid. Students should also reach out to their school counselors and college and career coaches for additional support around financial aid for college. 

CPS Students: Submit Your Work to the RE•VER•BER•ATE Arts Festival

Submissions are now open for RE•VER•BER•ATE, a free multidisciplinary arts festival that will take place in downtown Chicago from May 1–4, 2024! This opportunity is open to all CPS students in grades pre-k–12. Check out highlights from last year’s festival here.

There are separate applications for different categories of the festival, and students can apply to multiple categories:

Presentando a los educadores emergentes de Chicago

Una de las metas de Teach Chicago Tomorrow —que ilustra el punto de Yehiri— es reclutar y desarrollar educadores de color con los que puedan identificarse nuestros estudiantes y que compartan algunos aspectos de sus experiencias de vida. Una de las maneras más poderosas de hacer esto es cultivando el talento que ya existe en nuestras escuelas, que es exactamente lo que busca hacer TCT. 

El próximo grupo de TCT comenzará en julio de 2024, y la fecha límite para solicitar es el 26 de abril. Este programa está abierto a todos los miembros de la clase del 2024, además de los egresados de las CPS que se hayan graduado entre el 2019 y el 2023. Los estudiantes y los egresados interesados en el programa deberían llenar el formulario de interés en el programa (en inglés) e inscribirse para una sesión informativa virtual (en inglés). 

En menos de un año, miembros del primer grupo de TCT estarán enseñando como estudiantes practicantes en nuestras aulas y preparándose para tomar cargo de sus propias aulas. Tengo toda confianza en que este programa los habrá preparado bien, y anticipo con entusiasmo ver el impacto que tendrán en nuestra próxima generación de estudiantes de las CPS.

Cinco preguntas a Yehiri González, académica de Teach Chicago Tomorrow

Esta semana nos complace resaltar a Yehiri González, egresada de las CPS, aspirante a maestra bilingüe de escuela primaria, y parte del primer grupo de Teach Chicago Tomorrow. 

Yehiri cursa su tercer año en la Universidad Estatal de Illinois, pero escuchó por primera vez de Teach Chicago Tomorrow cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria, en la Preparatoria Lane Tech. Le interesó de inmediato: Yehiri siempre quiso ser maestra, y nunca dudó que quería enseñar en las CPS. 

Durante su tiempo con el programa, Yehiri se ha aprovechado de todas las oportunidades que se le han presentado, y esta amplia gama de experiencias le ha dado conocimientos valiosos y la ha ayudado a explorar qué exactamente quiere hacer en el futuro. Actualmente, Yehiri se ocupa convirtiéndose en maestra sustituta de corto plazo y obteniendo experiencia directa en las aulas durante la etapa clínica del proceso. 

¿Hasta ahora, cuál ha sido la mejor parte de tu experiencia con Teach Chicago Tomorrow?

Llegar a trabajar con estudiantes de inmediato. Tenía un poco de miedo al principio, porque había escuchado de personas en otros programas que no habían obtenido experiencia hasta que llegó la hora de hacer la práctica, lo que los obligó a desarrollar una categoría entera de destrezas en muy poco tiempo. Sin embargo, creo que Teach Chicago Tomorrow ha hecho una excelente labor conectándonos con oportunidades de trabajar con estudiantes durante todo el programa. El programa también me ha ayudado muchísimo a ser más extrovertida.

Personal destacado

Puede que haya terminado la Semana Nacional de la Consejería Escolar, pero no podíamos dejar pasar una oportunidad para resaltar al fantástico equipo de consejería de la Escuela Secundaria Chicago Academy. Éste es conocido como un grupo que cuida las cabezas y los corazones de sus estudiantes y personal, con un enfoque en el apoyo socioemocional, planificación postsecundaria y consejería académica.

También queremos reconocer la fantástica labor de la trabajadora social Jereece Brown, quien ha trabajado para las CPS por 30 años. Como trabajadora social escolar, ella es responsable de coordinar servicios para los estudiantes para asegurar que sus necesidades sean satisfechas. Sus colegas la describen como una persona amable y bondadosa que da del todo para ayudar a los estudiantes con su salud mental, bienestar socioemocional y ambiciones académicas. 

Un vistazo al Distrito 

La Escuela Mágnet Disney II, en el barrio de Old Irving Park, dió comienzo al Mes de la Historia Negra con su evento “My Block, My Hood, My City”, con el orador invitado especial Jahmal Cole, cuyo mensaje para los estudiantes aconsejó que escogieran hacer lo que los eleven en la dirección correcta, y que siempre ayudaran a sus comunidades.  

La Escuela Secundaria Whitney Young, localizada en la comunidad Near West Side, acogió a estudiantes y personal de RDFZ, escuela asociada con la Universidad Renmin de China. Durante la visita, estudiantes de ambas escuelas trabajaron juntos para hacer una presentación celebrando el Año Nuevo Lunar, y fueron acompañados por el cónsul general de China en Chicago. 

En la Escuela Secundaria Curie, en Archer Heights, la Unión de Estudiantes Negros llevó a cabo la edición inaugural de su celebración comunitaria del Mes de la Historia Negra. La celebración incluyó hermandad, moda y platos que representaron una variedad de culturas panafricanas.  

Estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria Beasley, en Washington Park, asistieron a su baile “It’s All About Love”. El evento fue organizado como parte de un incentivo del programa Attendance Challenge, que celebra estudiantes con asistencia de 98% o mejor. 

En la Escuela Secundaria Von Steuben, en North Park, el director de banda, Mr. Taylor, organizó un círculo de tambor africano para estudiantes y personal, como homenaje al Mes de la Historia Negra.

La Escuela Primaria Nettelhorst, en Lake View East, celebró el Festival de Primavera, celebrando toda la semana el Festival de Arte Asiatico YUAN. Usando talleres de teatro y arte, el festival educó a los estudiantes sobre el día de fiesta y la historia de 1,500 años del arte chino. 

La Escuela Secundaria North-Grand, en Hermosa, recientemente tuvo en su espacio la segunda parte de la calificadora estatal de las CPS de First Robotics. Hagan clic aquí para ver a muchos equipos sobresalientes navegar una serie de retos, demostrando así el espíritu de la innovación. 

Finalmente, en la Escuela Intermedia Richardson, en West Lawn, los estudiantes celebraron el Mes de la Historia negra con varias actividades, tales como la creación de una tabla periódica de afroamericanos prominentes, un estudio de la fotografía de Gordon Parks, y exhibiendo banderas y otras decoraciones por la escuela. 

Dos maestras de las CPS son declaradas finalistas para el premio Illinois Teacher of the Year

Felicitaciones a Mashanda Scott, maestra de quinto grado en la Escuela Primaria Clara Barton, y Michelle Zurita-Sharpe, maestra de educación especial de prekínder en el Centro Preescolar Blair, por ser dos de las trece finalistas estatales para el premio Illinois Teacher of the Year, el máximo honor para maestros en el estado de Illinois.  

Presentado por la Junta de Educación del Estado de Illinois (ISBE, según sus siglas en inglés), los premios Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year celebran increíbles maestros escolares, administradores, equipos, voluntarios y personal de respaldo escolar que han tenido un impacto duradero en los estudiantes, las familias y sus compañeros educadores en sus comunidades escolares.  

Una semana histórica para los deportes en las CPS

Se hizo historia el 14 de febrero de 2024 cuando el fútbol bandera femenino de escuela secundaria fue oficialmente ratificado por la Asociación de Escuelas Secundarias de Illinois (IHSA, según sus siglas en inglés). La primera serie estatal será en otoño de 2024. Lean más aquí sobre como esta liga, comenzada en el 2021 por las Escuelas Públicas de Chicago y los Chicago Bears, ha florecido y llegado a ser un deporte oficial de la IHSA. 

Además, la Liga Pública de Chicago llevó a cabo su Semana de Campeonato anual durante la semana del 5 al 10 de febrero. Ésta tuvo lugar en el Credit Union 1 Arena en el campus de la Universidad de Illinois en Chicago y declaró campeones en todas sus divisiones de baloncesto.  

Los ganadores en sus divisiones incluyeron:  

• División Roja Femenina: Whitney Young
• División Roja Masculina: Curie
• División Azúl Femenina: Ogden International
• División Blanca Masculina: Manley
• División Verde Femenina: Marshall
• División Azul Masculina: Horizon-Southwest

• División Roja Masculina para Estudiantes de Décimo Grado: Curie

Anunciando las mesas redondas comunitarias sobre el éxito de estudiantes negros

Este año escolar, las CPS han creado un Grupo Trabajador para el Éxito de los Estudiantes Negros con la intención de desarrollar un plan para ayudar a los estudiantes negros a alcanzar mayor éxito académico. Este grupo trabajador llevará a cabo siete mesas redondas comunitarias para obtener opiniones y discutir recomendaciones. Estas serán en las siguientes fechas: 

• martes, 12 de marzo, de 5:30 a 7:30 p. m., en el lado norte de Chicago
• miércoles, 13 de marzo, de 5:30 a 7:30 p. m., en el lado sur de Chicago
• jueves, 14 de marzo, de 5:30 a 7:30 p. m., en el lado oeste de Chicago
• martes, 19 de marzo, de 10 a. m. a 12 p. m.; esta reunión será virtual  
• martes, 19 de marzo, de 5:30 a 7:30 p. m., en el sur extremo de Chicago
• miércoles, 20 de marzo, de 5:30 a 7:30 p. m., en el lado sur de Chicago
• jueves, 21 de marzo, de 5:30 a 7:30 p. m., en el oeste extremo de Chicago

Colaboración ayuda a las escuelas de las CPS a ser más verdes

Nos complace anunciar que las CPS se han unido al programa Healthy Green Schools & Colleges (HGSC), que brinda a los líderes de las instalaciones escolares los recursos para mejorar la calidad del aire interior y transformar la salud y la sostenibilidad de los ambientes escolares y universitarios. HGSC ofrece programas de desarrollo profesional y educacional, una red para acelerar la adopción de mejores prácticas; un estándar de certificación y pautas de implementación, y reconocimiento público de los distritos e instituciones de educación superior que alcancen el éxito en cuanto la salud y la sostenibilidad. 

Padres y tutores legales: favor recordarles a sus estudiantes compartir sus opiniones sobre las instalaciones escolares

Esta semana, los estudiantes de noveno a duodécimo grado recibieron en sus correos electrónicos de las CPS una breve encuesta sobre el estado de sus instalaciones escolares. Padres y tutores legales: favor exhórtenles a sus niños a completar esta encuesta para que podamos entender mejor qué inversiones nuestros estudiantes desean ver en sus escuelas, y utilizar esta información para ayudar a darle forma a nuestra próxima edición del Plan Maestro de Instalaciones Educativas. La fecha límite para completar esta encuesta es el viernes, 23 de febrero.  

Participen en la encuesta de alimentos escolares de las CPS

La encuesta anual de alimentos escolares de nuestro Distrito está disponible hasta el 1 de marzo de 2024. Esta es una oportunidad para que nuestras familias, y especialmente nuestros estudiantes, puedan compartir cómo se sienten sobre la comida que se les sirve en las escuelas cada día. La encuesta solo toma unos minutos en completar, e incluye preguntas sobre cuáles platos les gustan a los estudiantes, cuáles no les gustan, y qué cosas podrían mejorar la experiencia alimenticia en las escuelas.

Ya pueden completar la FAFSA los estudiantes de la clase del 2024

Ha comenzado el plazo para llenar la solicitud de asistencia financiera universitaria “Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid” (FAFSA). Completar la FAFSA podría resultar en becas Pell federales de hasta $7,395 para ayudar a financiar estudios universitarios, y, para los estudiantes que decidan hacer sus estudios universitarios en Illinois, hasta $8,400 en becas MAP. También ha comenzado el plazo para llenar la Solicitud Alterna, que brinda financiamiento de las becas MAP a residentes no documentados y está disponible a todos los estudiantes elegibles. Finalmente, las CPS han actualizado su página web de solicitud de asistencia financiera para incluir la información más actual; hagan clic aquí para obtener más detalles sobre cómo solicitar esta ayuda. Los estudiantes también deberían contactar a sus consejeros escolares y entrenadores de universidad y carreras para obtener respaldo adicional en cuanto a la asistencia financiera universitaria. 

Estudiantes de las CPS: Presenten sus obras al festival de arte RE•VER•BER•ATE

Ha comenzado el plazo para enviar presentaciones para RE•VER•BER•ATE, el festival de artes multidisciplinario gratuito para la comunidad de las CPS que tendrá lugar en el centro de Chicago del 1 al 4 de mayo de 2024. Esta oportunidad está disponible a todos los estudiantes de las CPS de prekínder a duodécimo grado. Aquí podrán ver las presentaciones y obras destacadas del festival del año pasado.

Las distintas categorías del festival requieren llenar distintos formularios de solicitud, y se puede solicitar a múltiples categorías:  

• Artes escénicas (solos, dúos y conjuntos pequeños): Soliciten aquí para el 1 de marzo de 2024.  
• Artes escénicas (conjuntos grandes): Soliciten aquí para el 1 de marzo de 2024.
• Artes visuales y mediáticas: Soliciten aquí para el 24 de marzo de 2024.
