Dear CPS Colleagues, Families, and Supporters,
Today, I am writing to share that I have humbly accepted an offer from the Chicago Board of Education to serve as the permanent CEO for Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
Years ago, when I was a CPS student, I never could have imagined I’d have this opportunity to serve. It’s fitting, though, that things worked out this way, as Chicago’s classrooms are where I first fell in love with education.
I spent more than ten years as a CPS teacher, learning alongside students whose brilliance and curiosity inspired me daily. Then, when I moved from the classroom to the principal’s office, I was able to have an even greater impact, supporting educators, families, and students in schools on both our city’s north and south sides.
Serving as a school principal changed how I think about responsibility. I suddenly knew how it felt to have an entire community looking to me for guidance and counting on me to lead. I have felt that same responsibility since taking on the role of Interim CEO last summer, and I am excited to further embrace it as the District’s permanent leader.
Despite the serious challenges we continue to face, I have confidence that CPS is moving in the right direction. We’re seeing academic progress stretching from our youngest students all the way through to our soon-to-be high school graduates. Our K-2 students are making huge gains, outpacing other large-city Districts in literacy, and outpacing the nation in math. At the other end of the spectrum, our high school seniors are graduating, earning college and career credentials, and being awarded scholarships in record numbers. This clear trajectory of progress is something I will be proud to build on and determined to protect as the District’s leader.
With support from their teachers and school leaders, CPS students have made a tremendous recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We cannot allow anything to put these gains at risk, including our District’s financial challenges. That’s why, as CEO, I pledge to continue advocating for the funding our students deserve, and why I will work with our educators, families, elected officials, and labor and community partners to pass a budget for next school year that keeps students’ needs at the center.
Also, because I firmly believe that strong leadership starts with listening, I look forward to further immersing myself in our school communities, hearing from everyone who is working together to ensure our students’ success. This will include engaging with our students themselves, as their voice is critical to our decision-making process.
As a proud CPS graduate, I see myself reflected in the eyes of our current students. Their success is my success, and I will stop at nothing to give them every opportunity that I can. I am grateful for the trust that has been placed in me, and I look forward to working with all of you to strengthen our students’ daily learning experience.

Hoy les escribo para decirles que he aceptado, con humildad, la oferta de la Junta de Educación de ejercer de manera permanente el puesto de directora ejecutiva de las Escuelas Públicas de Chicago (CPS).
Cuando era estudiante de CPS, hace años, nunca habría imaginado que tendría esta oportunidad para servir. Aún así, es apto que así terminaran las cosas, ya que las aulas de Chicago son el lugar donde me enamoré de la educación por primera vez.
Pasé más de diez años como maestra de CPS, aprendiendo junto a estudiantes cuya brillantez y curiosidad me inspiraban cada día. Luego, al pasar del aula a la oficina del liderazgo escolar, puede tener un impacto aún mayor, apoyando a educadores, familias y estudiantes en las escuelas del norte y el sur de nuestra ciudad.
Ejercer como directora escolar cambió cómo pienso de la responsabilidad. Repentinamente supe cómo se sentía tener una comunidad entera esperando mi dirección y contando con mi liderazgo. He sentido esa misma responsabilidad desde que acepté el puesto de directora ejecutiva interina el verano pasado, y me complace aceptarla una vez más como líder permanente del Distrito.
A pesar de los serios retos que continuamos enfrentando, tengo confianza en que CPS se mueve en la dirección correcta. Estamos viendo progreso académico desde nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes hasta nuestros graduandos de escuela secundaria. Nuestros estudiantes de kínder a segundo grado están tomando pasos agigantados en sus estudios, superando a otros distritos urbanos de gran tamaño en cuanto a la alfabetización, y a la nación en general en las matemáticas. Al otro lado de la trayectoria escolar, nuestros estudiantes de duodécimo grado están graduándose, obteniendo credenciales universitarias y profesionales, y obteniendo becas en cantidades récord. Este claro progreso es algo que con orgullo continuaré desarrollando y con determinación protegeré como líder del Distrito.
Con el apoyo de los maestros y líderes escolares, los estudiantes de CPS han logrado una tremenda recuperación de la pandemia de COVID-19. No podemos permitir que nada ponga estas ganancias bajo riesgo, y esto incluye las dificultades financieras de nuestro Distrito. Es por eso que, como directora ejecutiva, me comprometo a continuar luchando por los fondos que merecen nuestros estudiantes, y es por eso que trabajaré con nuestros educadores, familias, oficiales electos, y colaboradores laborales y comunitarios para pasar un presupuesto para el año escolar que viene que mantenga centrado las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes.
Además —porque creo firmemente que el liderazgo fuerte requiere escuchar con atención— espero con entusiasmo adentrarme más en nuestras comunidades escolares, escuchando de todos aquellos que estén trabajando para garantizar el éxito de nuestros estudiantes. Esto incluirá interacciones con nuestros propios estudiantes, ya que sus voces son parte crítica de nuestra toma de decisiones.
Como orgullosa egresada de CPS, me veo reflejada en los ojos de nuestros estudiantes. Su éxito es mi éxito, y haré todo lo posible para darles todas las oportunidades que pueda.
