Stabilization

Stabilization shows the percentage of students who either stay enrolled in a CPS school through the end of the school year or graduate.

Stabilization

99.1%

2.0% increase from previous school year

Where This Data Comes From

  • Student enrollment records at the end of each school year
  • Students who stay within CPS—not those who transfer to another school district

Why This Matters

Staying in school is critical to students’ success. Dropping out reduces the likelihood of graduation and future opportunities for college, careers, and long-term success. Because Options schools serve students who often move between schools or face unique challenges, it’s important that they help students stay engaged and find their next "best fit" if they decide to transfer.

What It Can & Cannot Tell You

It Can Tell You:

  • Can show whether students are staying in school or earning their diploma.
  • Can highlight when schools need more resources and interventions to help students stay engaged.
  • Can point to dropout patterns across groups of students.

It Cannot Tell You:

  • Cannot explain why students leave—common reasons include health, work responsibilities, transportation challenges, or family needs.
  • Cannot be used alone to judge school quality, since many factors beyond the classroom affect whether students stay enrolled.

Questions You May Ask the School

  • How does the school support students who are facing challenges outside of the classroom?
  • If a student needs to move, how does the school help them transfer to a new school without a gap in their learning?
  • How does the school follow up with students who stop attending?
  • What programs or partnerships help keep students engaged through graduation?
