Postsecondary Pathways & Transition Enrollment

This measure shows how well schools help students with significant cognitive disabilities move into meaningful programs after graduation, such as transition centers, college programs, job training, apprenticeships, employment, or service opportunities.

Where This Data Comes From

  • student icon

This measure uses enrollment information for high school graduates who participate in alternate assessments*. It tracks whether they move into:

    • A transition center**
    • A college program or job-training program
    • The military
    • Paid employment or an apprenticeship
    • A service or gap-year program

    * Alternate assessments are tests for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. Students take these tests when regular state tests are not appropriate, even with extra help or tools (called accommodations).

** Transition learning centers provide specialized education for high school students with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities. Programs capitalize on student interest and strength while preparing them to become members of the community

Why This Matters

Students with significant learning needs often need extra support to move into adult life. This measure helps families see how well the school is preparing these students for life after high school. It also shows whether students are getting chances to explore different options and how well the school connects them to programs that build independence, skills, and confidence.

What It Can & Cannot Tell You

It Can Tell You:

  • Can show how many graduates with significant cognitive disabilities enroll in a postsecondary program or job.
  • Can show whether schools are providing strong transition supports.
  • Can show if graduates are successfully connecting to services and opportunities after high school.

It Cannot Tell You:

  • Cannot explain whether students stay in those programs long-term.
  • Cannot explain how successful a student is once enrolled.
  • Cannot provide information about students who do not take alternate assessments.
