Chronic Absenteeism

Chronic absenteeism means a student is missing too much school. It happens when a student misses 10% or more of the school year, no matter the reason. Missing this much school can make it harder for a student to learn, make social connections, and create a pattern of successful habits for the future.

Underlying Causes of Chronic Absenteeism

  • Health Issues
Chronic illness, mental health conditions (anxiety, depression), or frequent minor illnesses.

For more information regarding mental health support visit the Mental Health page.

  • Family Challenges
Unstable housing, caregiving responsibilities, or family crises.

For more information please visit our Student in Transitional Living Situations and our Crisis Support pages.

  • Economic Barriers
Lack of transportation, food insecurity, or needing to work to support the family.

For guidance on transportation, visit Transportation Services; for other family supports, visit our Parent Support webpage.

  • Bullying & Safety Concerns
Fear of bullying, harassment, or unsafe school environments.

For more information regarding CPS Bullying policies and supports, visit Addressing Bullying and Bias-Based Behaviors.

  • Lack of Engagement
Boredom, lack of motivation, or feeling disconnected from teachers and peers.

CPS offers many opportunities for students to become more engaged in school. We suggest contacting your school and learning about what clubs, sports, and other extracurricular activities are offered.

  • Academic Struggles
Difficulty keeping up with coursework, leading to avoidance.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS), has brought more than 600 Chicagoans into schools as tutors through their Tutor Corps program. Contact your student’s school to learn more about tutoring opportunities.
